Latest update
A shared vision: the regional economic strategy for the East of England is now available. The consultation report on the draft regional economic strategy 'Progressing a shared vision - the draft regional economic strategy' for the East of England is at: Summary report of the consultation responses to the progressing a shared vision draft regional economic strategy.
Background
The first Regional Economic Strategy for the East of England was produced in 1999. The initial revision of the strategy was completed in 2001 when, 'East of England 2010: Prosperity and opportunity for all' was produced. A second revision of the strategy has now been completed, and the new strategy was published in December 2004.
EEDA, with the support of the East of England Regional Assembly, adopted a 'scenario planning' approach to help inform the development of a revised strategy. Further details of this work can be found in the 'downloads' section below.
EEDA produced a draft of the revised strategy at the beginning of May, Progressing a Shared Vision - the Draft Regional Economic Strategy for the East of England. Responses to this document were invited in the three month consultation period, running through May, June and July. A report on this second written consultation is available here.
We received over 170 written responses to the consultation document. A list of the organisations that responded can be viewed here.
The results from the second written consultation informed the production of the final version of the revised strategy. The new strategy is now available. EEDA has also published supporting documentation on the implications of the regional economic strategy for the region's rural areas and growth areas and for businesses and employers and for the voluntary and community sector.
Sustainability Appraisal and Rural Proofing
One of the key objectives for the review of the regional economic strategy is to set a framework for the delivery of more sustainable economic development that meets the needs and aspirations of both urban and rural communities.
To ensure that the appraisal reflects a third party view and to support the work of the appointed consultant and the review project team, a steering group was set up, including representatives from EERA, EEDA, Go-East and the Countryside Agency.
A final report is now available setting out the methodology and findings of the combined sustainability and rural proofing appraisal of the 'A Shared Vision - the draft regional economic development strategy for the East of England'. The appraisal provides a third party view and based on the independent work of the consultant appointed to carry out the work. Also available is an interim appraisal that was used as the basis for further policy development leading to the preparation of the full regional economic strategy.

Scenario Planning
The development of the strategy has been a highly participative process involving a range of partner organisations. The supporting document 'Scenario Planning: developing a shared understanding of the influences on the economic development of the East of England' contains a description of the scenario planning process and its outputs.
Consultation Reports
'Sharing the challenge – playing your part in reviewing the regional economic strategy' was published at the end of January 2004. This was the first of two written consultation documents to be produced during the period of the review. The purpose of this initial document was to invite views on the 'high level issues' that the revised regional economic strategy should address. The consultation period closed on 27th February.
Summary report of the consultation responses to the 'sharing the challenge – high level issues consultation document' This report summarises the consultation responses received to the sharing the challenge high level issues consultation document.
A second consultation document 'Progressing a shared vision – the draft regional economic strategy for the East of England' was published in May 2004 for three months. We received over 170 written responses to the consultation document. A report summarising the consultation responses is available here: Summary report of the consultation responses to the progressing a shared vision draft regional economic strategy.
