Integrated Sustainability Framework Atlas - Introduction

What is the Integrated Sustainability Framework?

The Integrated Sustainability Framework (ISF) is a statement of the sustainable development priorities and challenges facing the East of England. Its vision is: β€œTo promote and enhance the environmental, economic and social well-being of the East of England, and ensure a better quality of life for everyone – now and in the future.” The ISF seeks to identify:

  • The main objectives to achieve sustainable development in the East of England;
  • How those objectives are being addressed by current regional targets in the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and Regional Economic Strategy (RES) and any gaps that may need to be addressed in a future Single Regional Strategy;
  • A monitoring framework to assess current and future performance in relation to the sustainable development objectives;

What is the ISF Atlas?

The Integrated Sustainability Framework Atlas is a data visualisation tool providing instant access to the datasets set out in the ISF monitoring framework. The atlas contains over 30 datasets at Regional, and local authority level. Data is available to view simultaneously in map, chart and tabular formats, showing regional and local trends in sustainable development performance.

What does the ISF Atlas show?

The data is organised by ISF objective, with each objective containing measures set out in the ISF monitoring and performance framework. On selecting a dataset, the atlas displays the data on screen in tabular format; in a bar chart comparing values across geographic areas; and within a thematic map showing geographic trends. A time series chart displays trends over time for any area selected on the map, bar chart, or data table. A separate table contains comparison and RES/RSS target data viewable on the time series and bar charts where available.

How can I use the ISF Atlas?

The Atlas is free to access, simple to use and runs within a web browser. You will need Adobe Flash Player in order to access the Atlas, which is available to download free from the Adobe website. A comprehensive help page is available explaining how to make the most of the atlas functionality.

What data does the atlas contain?

A wide range of economic, environmental, and social datasets are available within the atlas. These include; core economic indicators such as GVA and employment rates; waste and recycling measures; Ecological footprint calculations; skills data such as qualification attainment; transport use statistics such as distances travelled per year by mode of transport; and a variety of National Indicators. For a comprehensive list of datasets included, see the Integrated Sustainability Framework document

Where does the data come from?

There are over 10 sources of data used to compile the ISF Atlas; a full list is available here.. From within the atlas the info button opens a new page showing the source of the currently loaded dataset.

How often do updates occur?

Updates of the data contained within the atlas will occur as new releases become available. There are over 10 different sources of data, each of which updated at different frequencies and for different periods. Updates will therefore occur regularly.

Periodic updates to the Atlas functionality will take place as and when updates become available from the software supplier.

Can I print reports from the Atlas?

A printing facility is available by right clicking within the atlas. It is possible to move and re-size individual elements prior to printing. Please see the help page for more information.

Will there be any further datasets added?

The ISF monitoring and performance framework provides the basis for data inclusion in the Atlas. Some of the datasets required to monitor the ISF are as-yet unavailable; once available they will be included.

Yes, but please be aware that links may change over time.
